Carl Robson, classic car mechanic: The cylinder head on this car has got to be taken off because the adjoining gasket between the bottom and top half of the engine, we suspect that it's split or broken. I've been specialising in classic cars for over ten years. I'm not really too keen on modern cars. So I don't think they're quite so much fun. I set up for myself about three, three and a half years ago. Trying to keep my overheads down I was using other people's premises and I'd hire premises on a daily basis. I didn't go into any major loans or anything like that. You need a lot of will and you need a lot of determination and be prepared to pay yourself very, very little in order for the business to survive. Kevin Brett, Master Technician: It is getting more computerised and it is getting more technical. But you still do get dirty. It's going away from the conventional engine and getting more electronic. This is a computer that we diagnose engine faults with. The diagnostics is just a quicker and easier way of curing a problem. You plug it in under the dash. And it's telling me that there's a fault in the system. It gives me a number and then the description of the fault. There's a lot of hard work for possibly four or five years. If you can get an apprenticeship, that is brilliant. I've got Master Technician. Now I'm aiming for management—hopefully. You're dealing with people's lives, so if you do it wrong and you're not confident about doing something, it could cost someone their life, couldn't it? So you've got to be confident in what you do.
