FOOD FROM THE LAND
We’re all different…
But food affects us all.
Wherever we live...
And whatever we do.
This woman is part of a growing trend in the west
for growing your own.
And around the world,
the place you call home
can dictate the food you eat,
and the life you live.
If you’re stranded in the rainforest
you have to make do with whatever food is available,
no matter how unpalatable.
There are plenty of foods eaten
by different cultures that would turn
the stomach of an average westerner.
The people of Samoa
welcome the return of the annual
Palolo worm migration.
It’s a rich harvest
and they’ll even eat them straight from the sea.
But in the western world,
we’re no longer tied to the foods we can produce.
If something’s out of season,
or doesn’t grow here, that’s fine.
It’s just shipped in from somewhere else.
Recently there’s been a move
towards more sustainable food production
with some living the good life
and growing their own.
Keeping your own chickens
avoids the need for battery farm eggs.
And vegetables don’t need a lot of space to grow,
but you will have to put up
with seasonal fluctuations.
You won’t find a supermarket
range of vegetables at the tail end of winter.
You’d be lucky to get a few small potatoes.
This getting ‘back to nature’
and using locally grown organic food,
is a backlash against modern food technology.
Farming has become big business.
Agriculture on a massive scale,
growing as much as possible
for the highest profits.
Food is now so highly processed
that we no longer know its origins.
Some would say
it’s destroying our association with the land.
There are children in the west today
who don’t even realise milk comes from cows.
They’ve no idea where their food really comes from.
We might think we need all this choice,
but it is possible for humans,
not only to survive,
but to thrive without any choice at all.
The frozen wastelands of Greenland
provide a very limited diet for the local Inuits.
But they are healthy.
A 1943 study showed
they have incredibly low rates
of heart disease.
prompting science to look at the health benefits
of omega 3 rich oily fish.
So where do people live the longest?
The Mediterranean diet is a long lived wonder.
Fresh ingredients and reliance
on olive oil seem to do the trick.
Japan has the highest average life span of all at 85 years.
Could it be because they tend to go for smaller portions?
Tests suggest that less food
could be the answer to a longer life,
for mice at least.
Proving it in humans is going to take a lot longer.
If it’s true, then in the western world,
where it’s possible to eat a day’s calories
in just one junk food sitting,
it’s amazing
we live anywhere near as long as we do.
So perhaps going back to food from the land
might be the healthiest way to live after all.
